Have young visitors in town but don’t want to go to the circus? Consider taking them to see Japanese dancer Shizumi, who interprets traditional Asian literature, theater, and dance for mostly Western audiences. Her show presents a variety of classic Japanese dramatic styles (including no and the comedic koygen) using original choreography, brilliant costumes, and the dancer’s own unconventional technique of slipping almost imperceptibly between Japanese and English speech. The result is both powerful and elegant—something you can’t really say about Jumbo. At 1 and 3 p.m. (the later performance is sign-interpreted) at the Kennedy Center’s Theater Lab. $10. (202) 467-4600. (Dan Avery)
