Cuban trumpeter and ¡Cubanismo! band leader Jesús Alemañy now calls London home, but his heart and soul reside where most of his band lives, in the land ruled by Castro. On ¡#Cubanismo!’s third CD, Reencarnació#n, Alemañy continues his musical love affair with classic Afro-Cuban sounds. He pens originals and arranges covers that capture the vitality of ’50s Havana nightclubs. With a new pianist and a new singer, Alemañ#y’s unit brings that jazzy sound to life with improvised piano solos, punchy brass interludes, and call-and-response vocals over clave and conga beats. Retro, sure, but the mix of old-timers and young bloods who power this big band’s swinging polyrhythms make music so danceable it’s hard to complain. ¡#Cubanismo! performs at 8 p.m. at the Barns of Wolf Trap, 1624 Trap Road, Vienna. $23. (703) 938-2404. (Steve Kiviat)
