While it’s not unusual for DJ Andy Smith to drop a little Tom Jones or even some Peggy Lee into one of his sets, as he does on his recent mix CD, The Document, the live decksman for triphop phenom Portishead generally sticks close to his roots. (He was a struggling hiphop selecter when he was asked to join the band by Portishead founding member Geoff Barrow in the group’s namesake town.) Underscoring the irony of his trip across the pond to blend some Yankee beats, Smith includes ur-mix record “The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel” in his own freaky flow. It’s rather like the early Rolling Stones touring the United States performing Chuck Berry covers, a British Invasion precedent Smith can’t help but wink at with a nifty segue into the Spencer Davis Group’s “I’m a Man” near The Document’s close. B.Y.O.T. when Smith spins tonight with Da Hool, Tom Novy, Sniper, MC Recka, Scott Henry, Onionz, J Smooth, John Tab, and Lovegrove at 10 p.m. at Nation, 1015 Half St. SE. $12. (202) 828-1984.
