With all the crap going on in the world and the daily press once again churning out wartime propaganda, it was so nice to read Dave McKenna’s story on Secretariat, my choice for Athlete of the Century (Cheap Seats, “Turning Back the Clock,” 5/7). I was lucky enough to visit Claiborne Farms on a quiet Saturday afternoon in 1988 on a business trip to Kentucky and lay a hand on Big Red. The picture of that moment is among my prized possessions. The tip I gave the groom who brought me to “Red,” as he called him, was about the best 10 bucks I ever spent. Now I’m getting a little verklempt thinking about it. Thanks for the good news.
