I am writing to express my opinion regarding Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book review of Lawrence Otis Graham’s Our Kind of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class (“The Wrong People,” 5/21). Coates’ review of the book was unnecessarily hostile. Graham is only portraying a slice of American life. That some of the people portrayed hold different points of view than Coates was no reason for the critic to speak so harshly of the book. For me, as a member of the black middle class, I find it refreshing to see a variety of black America’s backgrounds portrayed.
