Last week, Washington Post columnist Courtland Milloy suggested that erecting a new prison in Ward 8’s Oxon Cove might be a bold new experiment in neighborhood building. The column surprised many of Milloy’s faithful readers. D.C. Green Party members were also surprised to read that Joyce Scott, who heads pro-prison Citizens for a Progressive Ward 8, says that she recently spoke about the prison project at a Green Party meeting. While speaking, Scott claims, she was shouted down by a member who challenged her support for the prison. Green Party members, who do indeed oppose the Ward 8 prison, say they never invited Scott to speak at the meeting. Besides, says party member Scott McLarty, Greens are a civil and extremely polite audience. “We were rather flabbergasted,” says McLarty. “This just never happened. Either we’re being smeared or she has us confused with another organization.” Scott still insists she attended the Green Party meeting, though. “I don’t care what they say,” she says, adding that she has more important things to worry about. “If you’re not going to ask about my work trying to get my message out, then I’m not going to talk to you….I’m moving on, baby.”
