It can’t be done: A 727 weighing 145,000 pounds is not to be moved by 20 people; not 20 beefy people; not 20 Schwarzeneggers. Yes, I’ve been to planepull.com, but I don’t believe a word of it. “This is the original plane pull,” it proclaims, as if a burgeoning plane-pulling bootleg market existed. And all the site says is that this event has taken place six times previously. Just because people tried, it doesn’t mean they succeeded. The clearly impossible task was started by Deputy Chief of Police of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Joe Hurtuk, who is known among his colleagues as the “Father of the Plane Pull.” So go to Dulles Day to see the space shuttle Discovery, the fancy aircraft and automobiles, and the badge and patch displays. But don’t expect planes to be pulled. Instead, watch a bunch of crazy humans give themselves hernias.
