There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Heshers were everywhere at my high school. There was the guy who sat next to me in geometry class, who’d turn my way every 10 minutes, close his eyes, slowly shake his head, and intone, “Maiden—fuck yeah.” Then there was the guy from small-time local speed-metal band Cathedral of Evil, who’d bring his black Hamer to school and play it in the hall between classes. If these two live anywhere near Wheaton, I know where they’ll be tonight: at Phantasmagoria, checking out three outfits from the current legion of doom metallers, Pittsburgh’s Penance, Frederick’s Internal Void, and Dale City’s While Heaven Wept. Adding blissed-out influences ranging from Kitaro to Hawkwind to good old-fashioned Sabbath-style sludge, all three practice a form of brutal psychedelia that’ll ruin your hearing, expand your mind, and satisfy your darkest Hessian obsessions. Fuck yeah. With St. Louis alt-rockers Pale Divine at 9 p.m. at Phantasmagoria, 11319 Elkin St., Wheaton. $8. (301) 949-8886. (Leonard Roberge)
