Impressively constructed piece (“Queen of Mean,” 6/18)! You presented Rice in a fair way and brought her alive as a person, not a caricature, even though she seems to have shared little about herself (such as the why and wherefore of her trajectory from punk rocker to landlord lapdog).
The Washington Post occasionally features pieces like this. (Eric Wee, I think, is one of their writers who can do this shtick well.) But the job is left to the Washington City Paper to keep its eye out for local characters whose stories bring the local scene alive.
