I’m astounded at the high praise you gave David Finkel for his reporting from the Balkans (Paper Trail, 7/2). As far as I could tell, the reporter was almost always at the forefront of the writing, not the victims in Kosovo. Far from being “graceful” or a “linguistic guerrilla,” I would characterize his performance as an inadvertent parody of Hemingway at his worst.
