On Saturday, at a counterdemonstration against the downtown Nazi rally that wasn’t, a meager crowd is gathered around Peter Yarrow, the Peter from Peter, Paul, and Mary. On cue, everybody holds hands and starts softly singing “We Shall Overcome,” swaying gently to and fro. Somewhere before the “We Shall Live in Peace” verse, one of the young attendees—a New Jersey college student interning at a D.C. hospital—leans over to a reporter and inquires: “Do you know what this song is from?”
