Mary Jane Lamond demonstrates perfectly how Scottish musical traditions have thrived and evolved in North America. Born in Ontario, Lamond frequently visited her grandparents in Cape Breton, where she acquired a love for her Gaelic heritage. Lamond has since developed a musical style that brilliantly fuses ancient roots with modern pop. She sings entirely in Scottish Gaelic, in a fairly unadorned style, but surrounds her voice with modern funk ‘n’ roll grooves. Because the traditional songs Lamond chooses to perform are inherently rhythmic, all the electronics really do is sharpen their drive. It’s a fantastic combination, as you’ll find out tonight, when the Gaelic funk party begins at 9 p.m. at Iota, 2832 Wilson Blvd., Arlington. $10. (703) 522-8340. (Ken Roseman)
