Comb your bangs down over your eyes, pull on a striped T, and shine your Docs—you’ll soon be staring at your feet, again. Breathless plays vintage shoegaze, circa 1990. Its new single, “Magic Lamp,” could be an outtake from a late Spacemen 3 album. Dominic Appleton’s vocals add just a hint of gothic darkness to the waves of guitar and organ slowly washing over them throughout the band’s lush psychedelic creations. 4AD label head Ivo Watts-Russell drafted Appleton for his This Mortal Coil project, using him to great advantage on songs like Chris Bell’s affecting “I Am the Cosmos.” This high-profile guest spot has too often rendered Appleton’s pre-existing band a mere footnote to the cultishly adored supergroup. So rediscover Breathless with its new album, Blue Moon. It may be the band’s first new recordings in years, but it sounds like no time has passed at all. With Tone at 9:30 p.m. at the Metro Cafe, 1522 14th St. NW. $10. (202) 518-7900. (Mark W. Sullivan)
