Love is the Law Michael Heffner and Jeffrey Travers’ love for each other won’t just be something for the couple’s friends and family to celebrate. With legislation passed Tuesday, the D.C. Council joins in the fun, too. Alas, the Michael Heffner and Jeffrey Travers Commitment Ceremony Celebration Resolution of 1999 doesn’t provide the legal benefits of, say, a state-sanctioned legal wedding. But Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham says his bill—which he believes is the first ceremonial resolution honoring a gay union—is a big deal nonetheless.
“It’s important to honor this kind of commitment,” Graham says. And will the council grant itself sweeping oversight powers to make sure the couple loves, honors, and obeys their city-sanctified union? “We’ll revoke it” if they ever break up, Graham jokes.
