Trumpeter Nicholas Payton’s new CD, Nick@Night, was supposed to be out in October but was pushed to January—probably to capitalize on something or other. Payton’s entire career has been a marketer’s dream, from his association with the Marsalis family to his 1997 Grammy-winning turn with nonagenarian trumpeter Doc Cheatham to his role in Robert Altman’s 1996 movie bomb Kansas City. OK, so that last one is a little shaky, but Payton will survive because, after Wynton, he is New Orleans’ other trumpeter saint. (Does Ricky Williams blow his own horn yet? No, Mike Ditka still does that for him. Hey, now!). Hear what you’ll be hearing after Nick@Night drops in 2000 when Payton plays at 8 & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Rear. $20 (202) 337-4141. (Christopher Porter)
