Min Xiao-Fen is a virtuoso on the pipa, a 2,000-year-old, four-stringed lute-type instrument. She has played with everyone from orchestras to free-jazz guitarist Derek Bailey, but perhaps her best—and least known, even to her—collaboration is with the defunct local band Sabine. I know, because I was in Sabine, and we improvised alongside her interpretation of the 18th-century tune “Jackdaws Playing in the Water” (from her CD Spring, River, Flower, Moon, Night) for our song “Chinese Poems With English Translations.” The performance ended up on our only CD, and, like true thieves, we didn’t credit Xiao-Fen because of legal fears. But now, two years later, with CD sales in the dozens, I want to offer thanks and apologies to Xiao-Fen in person when she performs with the string quintet Gotham Muzik at 7:30 p.m. at the Freer Gallery’s Meyer Auditorium, 12th & Jefferson Drive SW.
