Audio astronaut Mark Spybey makes a strong case for (head)space exploration. As leader of Dead Voices on Air (and, briefly, a member of Zoviet France), Spybey has created ambient driftworks that are both ominous and tranquil. Albums like How Hollow Heart…, Shap, Hafted Maul, and A Peripheral Blur (a collaboration with guitarist James Plotkin) are soundtracks for the hazy moments between sleep and wakefulness. His tourmates from Not Breathing, who collaborated with Spybey on A Fire in the Bronx Zoo, favor underpinning their drones and swooshes with light industrial and Kraftwerklike beats. The band’s CDs, The Starry Wisdom and Sangre Azul, sound like Skinny Puppy minus the angst. Explore your own head, with DVOA and Not Breathing providing the background sounds, at 9 p.m. at the Metro Cafe, 1522 14th St. NW. $8. (202) 518-7900. (Christopher Porter)
