He’s Got the Hookup Ever since he was elected to represent Ward 7 on the D.C. Council, Kevin Chavous has been casting about for the ideal second job. In his early years, the councilmember tried to juggle litigation for clients at Cadeaux and Taglieri along with his council duties. The result: numerous dropped balls and a poor council attendance record, which haunted his unsuccessful 1998 mayoral run. This year, Chavous tried to fashion a less litigious schedule with Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn, but the double duty still allowed him only two full days per week at One Judiciary Square. Now the councilmember has ditched that firm in favor of a federal lobbying post with Santa Clara, Calif.-based Covad Communications, a provider of high-speed Internet and network access. “I have an interest in seeing that technology reaches children,” says Chavous, who noted that his new duties will “probably” allow him to focus more on his legislative part-time job.
