They call it “cabaret rock nouveau.” And also “new millennium/alternative/world/message music.” Which indicates that the music of Xyra & Verborgen doesn’t fall easily into any preconceived categories. And that’s why it strikes the ear so acutely. Drawing on many influences from the past, the band manages to sound brand-new. And, of course, it is. The seven-piece group features classical- and jazz-tinged strings, woodwinds, and piano on top of a solid rock rhythm section, with Xyra’s distinctive voice emoting at the front. The hauntingly elegant songs on the band’s new CD, Frightening Beauty, cut through the clutter of the usual brand of pop and stick with you like a five-course meal. Xyra & Co. will showcase their signature sound at a CD-release party at 8 and 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Rear. $14. (202) 337-4141. (Dave Nuttycombe)
