Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen were the first true “alternative country” band. In the early ’70s, rowdy sets by the Commander and his crew of musical renegades woke up a generation of boomer hippies to the pleasures of rockabilly, Western swing, and honky-tonk. The band broke through to the wider public when “Hot Rod Lincoln” cracked the Top 10 in 1972. Several years ago, the Commander moved from California to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., formed a new incarnation of the Lost Planet Airmen, and recently began recording his 17th album. Expect the energetic country-fried zaniness of yore to be in full effect when the Commander and his crew land in our area tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Lewie’s, 6845 Reed St., Bethesda. $12. (301) 652-1600. (Ken Roseman)
