There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Back Rent Metropolitan Police Department Officer Darrell Green turned himself in at the 4th District Jan. 4 after being accused of looting paintings, antiques, china, and Oriental rugs from a Vienna self-storage unit. It’s a good bet that the alleged booty wasn’t going toward furnishing any of the rental properties he owns. Linda Rose, a four-year tenant in one of Green’s apartments, has long accused the officer of operating as a slumlord. She’s also accused him of having workers cart off some of her possessions. Rose’s complaints ended up part of a flurry of civil litigation and complaints before Landlord and Tenant Court (“Staying Power,” 12/3/99). “Obviously, what he did to me was not an isolated event,” she says. “I feel glad that it’s out in the open. At last something is going to be done….I have been stressed to the max.” Of course, Rose has called detectives working Green’s case to offer her own stories about Green. They’ve promised to call her back.
