In reporting that taxi commissioner Sandra Seegars was called before a congressional subcommittee by Connie Morella (R-Md.) on “racial profiling,” Loose Lips (1/28) might have added:
1. Seegars was noting that cabdrivers were not picking up people they perceived to be threatening, especially after recent violent attacks. The messenger is not the message.
2. She has made suggestions on what could be done to protect drivers so they need not rely on often inaccurate and unfair selection criteria.
3. Once again, a member of Congress is making politically useful and politically safe points by excoriating D.C. officials in public hearings and on television. The police in Montgomery County have been blamed for racial profiling. The cabbies probably pick up everybody.
