Guy Raz finds German to be an unlikely source of good rap (Artifacts, “French Connection,” 3/17). Of course, bad rap can be made in any language—America is filled with bad rappers. I suggest to Raz, however, that he check out die Fantastischen Vier, a band out of Stuttgart. They are adamant about performing in German in a country where many of even the indigenous pop and rock groups sing in English. More important, they are very talented. The samples and music are clever and snappy, and the rapping exploits German’s gutteral sounds to kick some serious rhythms. Many of the lyrics are very funny or, especially on their CD Lauschgift, delve into interesting subjects like meditation or popularity. For my money, die Fantastischen Vier are the best German rappers. There are others.
