Last week, Home Depot signed a lease for the former Hechinger site in Tenleytown. And D.C. resident Ann Eichenberger couldn’t have been more thrilled. In June, Eichenberger bought a classified ad in the Northwest Current, urging readers to respond to a questionnaire about the state of hardware in the District. “This ad was paid for by an individual who is distressed about losing sales tax revenue to surrounding areas and hates to drive so far to a major hardware store,” she wrote. Eichenberger says she received more than 350 responses via e-mail and fax. “People wrote their hearts out,” she says, citing respondents who claimed to borrow or even rent cars to reach distant hardware stores. Having to leave the District to purchase a hammer or lumber “totally pisses me off,” says Eichenberger. —Lauri Apple
