Like most contemporary electronica outfits, Chessie frequently sounds as if it’s headed for outer space. But if it ever actually gets there, it will be under the power of one of mastermind Stephen Gardner’s beloved locomotives. A former member of revered Arlington noise-pop band Lorelei, Gardner actually works on the railroad, and named his current drum ‘n’ bass ‘n’ whistle group for the Chesapeake and Ohio’s historic sleeping-kitten logo. Chessie’s latest, Signal Series, features lots of click-clack rhythms, but plenty of guitar, too. Tonight’s performance, a rare excursion out of the roundhouse, is a collaboration with local photographer Colby Caldwell, who will provide an “improvisational visual mix.” DJ Breedlove 500+ opens at 8 p.m. at Signal 66, 926 N St. NW, Rear. $5 (suggested donation).
