When the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) holds its annual Bike DC event on Sept. 10, riders won’t quite bike all of D.C. The 35-mile ride will circle around the city without ever crossing the Anacostia River. Instead, riders will traverse Virginia’s George Washington Parkway. “It’s unfortunate,” explains WABA project manager Eric Gilliland. “One of the great things about the ride in the past is that we traveled through Anacostia Park….Many people had never been there, and they realized how beautiful it is.” Gilliland says that National Park Service officials forced WABA to choose only one out of three Park Service sites for the ride: George Washington Parkway, Rock Creek Park, or Anacostia Park. WABA in the end decided on George Washington Parkway. “Next year, we’ll work on a three-park ride,” says Gilliland. —Elissa Silverman
