Although I recently read a review of No Lie Relaxer that included the description “Gang of Four with chicks,” it seems rather unfair to pigeonhole the D.C. quartet as such. Sure, Morgan Daniels’ vocals have the sass of Jon King’s, and Mark Ropelewski’s guitars echo the strum and clang of Andy Gill’s finest moments, but…Well, OK, maybe the band does sound a little bit like Entertainment!-era Gang of Four, but No Lie Relaxer takes that oft-used formula and does some unpredictable things with it. The crack rhythm section of Allison Sheedy and Mike Marin lay down a foundation of serrated and frenetic rhythms for Ropelewski’s pell-mell fretwork and Daniels’ intriguing vox. Sure, plenty of bands in D.C.’s rich punk history have made “angular guitar-rock,” but No Lie Relaxer’s take on the sound plays more like an extraterrestrial transmission than your old copy of Solid Gold.
