Lafayette Square’s hardly the most frightening part of town. A small squadron of law enforcement types patrols the few square blocks across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, keeping sidewalks and park benches safe for tourists and anti-nuke protesters. But Carolyn Crouch of Washington Walks thinks the area’s quite macabre—even without George W. living in the ‘hood. On her “Capital Hauntings” walking tour, Crouch scares up ghost stories associated with the neighborhood’s most famous denizens, including several U.S. presidents and their assassins. And when everyone’s reached a Blair Witch Project level of fright, Crouch will end the evening with a calming trip to a neighborhood pub. Meet at 7:30 p.m. at the McPherson Square Metro Station’s White House exit, I Street and Vermont Avenue NW. $10. (202) 484-1565. (Elissa Silverman)
