There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
We might consider Four Bitchin’ Babes to be a distaff Menudo. Despite constantly changing membership, the name carries on. Started when wry singer-songwriter Christine Lavin invited pals Megon McDonough, Sally Fingerett, and Patty Larkin to share the stage, the group developed an unbridled kaffeeklatsch chemistry that proved so compelling that even when Lavin and Larkin left, other like-minded gals jumped in to continue the harmonic kvetching. Subsequent lineups have included the likes of Janis Ian and Mary Travers, but the group has settled—for now—with Debi Smith, of D.C.’s Smith Sisters, and Camille West, in addition to McDonough and Fingerett. This quartet has released The Babes Beyond Bitchin’, with a cover charmingly aping Meet the Beatles! and “Babe-O-Phonic” production values that venture nicely beyond the usual strumming Martins. As in previous efforts, the songs range from heartfelt to wacky, prime examples of the latter being “Viagra in the Waters” and “Toe to Toe With the HMO.” Join the Babes’ “traveling pajama party” tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $22.50.
