SATURDAY

It’s a singularly summery sound, and one more associated with lush, relaxing, tropical climes than with muggy, gray, workaholic Washington suburbs. But the Stateside Steel Band will bring its ringing pan drums to downtown Falls Church tonight as the opening act for the “inland beach party” that the Grandsons are throwing at the State Theatre. When the relentlessly eclectic Grandsons throw a party, it is one jumping shindig, indeed. And this one is extry-spacial because Stateside members Jon Danforth and Carol Arthur are themselves former Grandsons. They’ve joined with Oberlin College music major and pan-pounder Chris Moscatiello (brother of local songbird Lisa Moscatiello) to bring the pan repertoire beyond “Yellow Bird.” Grandson sax maniac Chris Watling just flew in from Las Vegas, and boy are his reeds tired from backing Ben E. King, Jerry Butler, and Lloyd Price. But tonight’s affair will be no oldies show. Prediction: Pan-tastic! At 7 p.m. at the State Theatre, 220 N. Washington St., Falls Church. $10. (703) 237-0300.
