SATURDAY
Tune in to WPFW on a Saturday afternoon and you’ll hear tuneful, down-home tales. Some will be bellowed in cigarette-stained croaks, others wailed Baptist-church-style. Throw in some between-song stories and jokes from the hosts and you’ve got yourself a great few hours of listening. Turn it into a live event and you have Blues Day 2000: The 3rd Annual Blues Day With the Gator and the Notorious Miss Monica. Highlights on this 10-act bill include not only oldies-circuit regulars Percy “When a Man Loves a Woman” Sledge and Archie “Tighten Up” Bell, but also James Brown-style funkster Lee “Sexy People” Fields and raunchy-mouthed soul siren Barbara “Bone Me Like You Own Me” Carr. The festival begins at 1 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium, 4101 Northeast Crain Highway, Bowie. $20-$25. (301) 350-3040. (Steve Kiviat)
