Indie-music scenes tend to form in strange places. Take Olympia, Wash., for example. It always makes me laugh to think of hipster kids arriving in Oly in hot pursuit of understated coolness or obliquely hip hangouts—because Olympia isn’t exactly cool. You could wander the eight-block downtown and see nothing even close to hip. Hippie maybe, but not hip. Now, I’d heard similar stories about Charlottesville, Va., and its music scene. So whenever I found myself down there, I’d stroll the streets, peer into the shops, and loiter in the coffee joints desperately seeking some tidbit of cool. I never found even an inkling of it. Turns out I was looking in the wrong places. You see, the hub of the Charlottesville music scene is located in a parking lot. Or at least the members of the city’s best band all work in one. Come ask True Love Always about the secret to perfect parking when it plays at Now! Music and Fashion. At 2 p.m. at Now! Music and Fashion, 3100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington. Free. (703) 528-9059.
