Thank you for an excellent article about domestic abuse (“Chronicle of a Death Foretold,” 10/27). The detailing of steps that a woman can take to stop abuse was outstanding. I think the most important information was how to marshal the financial help of family members to defuse this situation. Often, family members are torn with guilt and are just in a tough situation. What happens between a man and a woman is looked upon as not being their business. On the other hand, the possibility that a bad situation will surely escalate into violence once a family member literally tries to come between abuser and victim leaves them in an equally uncomfortable situation. Handing over cash for professional help means that the extended family is in less danger as well as the immediate family.
I have sent this article to a friend of mine who teaches computer skills to low-income residents in the newly renovated Edgewood Terrace Development. She is eager to share it with her students.
Many thanks to Paul Ruffins for an excellent article.
