All you socially maladjusted college-hoops junkies, get ready: The Sixth Annual BB&T Classic—a quickie tournament of four powerhouse Division I men’s teams—is loaded with more intrigue than an episode of Titans. Former George Washington University coach and—for a short, sweet time—savior Mike Jarvis, now the nattily dressed leader of the St. John’s Red Storm, will take on his old school in an emotional first-round game. On the opposing bench, GW coach Tom Penders, a former University of Texas big shot, will try to prove he can still outwit the best in the business (who just might be Jarvis). In the other opening-round matchup, the lightning-fast University of Michigan will take on the overrated University of Maryland. If the Terps, picked by several pundits to be the best in the land, stumble through this tourney the way they did in the Maui Invitational, then watch out: Coach Gary Williams’ super-veiny head will most likely explode all over the MCI Center crowd. At 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the MCI Center, 601 F St. NW. $40-$70 (proceeds benefit the Children’s Charities Foundation of Greater Washington). (202) 432-7328. (Sean Daly)
