It is more important than ever for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people to protect themselves—particularly when it comes to financial matters. Queers can’t marry legally; their families are nonentities in the government’s eyes. Most companies won’t cover health insurance for domestic partners. And don’t even think about what can happen if one partner becomes seriously ill or dies. Then again, if you’re gay or bi or trans, you are not equal with heterosexuals under law—that means you must think about this, like it or not. Today the law firm of Steffan & Macdonald LLC presents a seminar called “Estate Planning for the GLBT Communities.” The two-hour session covers the topic of revocable living trusts, which can help ensure—well, as much as is possible in a homophobic society—that you and your partner can be protected, even after one of you is gone. At 3 and 7 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 1250 22nd St. NW. Free. For reservations call (703) 691-4310. (ND)
