“So meet a bear and take him out to lunch with you/And even though your friends may stop and stare/Just remember that’s a bear there in the bunch with you/And they just don’t come no better than a bear.” Nice, huh? That’s from a 1976 Steven Fromholz tune called, naturally, “Bears.” Words to live by, if you ask me. Of course, during her “Bear Awareness” lecture tonight, REI backpacking superstar Veronica Marjerison will stubbornly scoff at such lyrical nonsense—especially the notion of sharing a midday meal with a shaggy omnivore. No, instead of detailing the true joys of fine dining with bears, Marjerison will go on and on about bear biology, bear-canister use, and how to recognize potentially dangerous bear situations. Whatever: Bears are cool in my book. At 7:30 p.m. at REI, 3509 Carlin Springs Road, Baileys Crossroads. Free. (703) 379-9400. (Sean Daly)
