SUNDAY
With a name like Dying Fetus, a band must find it really hard to attract new fans. Which is too bad, because 2000’s Destroy the Opposition contains some of the wildest, most worship-worthy dual-guitar pyrotechnics in recent memory. Sure, it’s death metal. But this Annapolis quartet doesn’t have much in common with your dad’s death metal (that is, if Pops digs Deicide). Eschewing the sketchy genre stuff about Satan and decaying corpses, Dying Fetus is more preoccupied with crusty-punk concerns like capitalist greed and religious hypocrisy. Plus, the guys write some of the finest hooks in the metal biz. If it weren’t for that one vocalist who sings—well, grunts—in the classic, absurdly low-pitched death-metal style, the band might transcend narrow subgenre labeling altogether. The fellas play their little hearts out with All Out War, Diecast, Hatred, Decapitate, and Dark Haven at 6 p.m. at Jaxx, 6355 Rolling Road, West Springfield. $10. (703) 569-5940. (Brent Burton)
