Back in the ’80s, long before O.J. took a long drive in his Ford Bronco, CNN’s legal savant Greta Van Susteren handled the appeal of one David Basnight. In 1981, Basnight killed a man who had shot at him while Basnight was robbing a bank in the District. Van Susteren lost the appeal, and since then Basnight had been serving the first of two consecutive sentences. Recently, Basnight’s new legal counsel, Kenneth Rosenau, discovered that the judge had based Basnight’s sentence on bad information about his prior record—information Van Susteren had failed to suss out. On Jan. 22, D.C. Superior Court Judge Michael Rankin resentenced Basnight, and he is now eligible for parole. —Annys Shin
