Don’t be alarmed—or too flattered—if a bartender slips a “Pick Me Up” coaster below your pint of ale next week. In an effort to promote Ban Landmines Week—which, if you want to mark your calendars, will be March 6 through 10—the United States Campaign to Ban Landmines is providing the coasters to D.C.’s trendiest watering holes, from the Black Cat to Tryst. Flip over the mat and “Surprise” (reads the beer mat), patrons get a brief disquisition on children and mines and the U.S. refusal to ratify an international treaty banning anti-personnel mines. It’s definitely better than picking up the real thing. —Richard Byrne
