At a press conference in the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel’s Chinese Room (where a black XFL banner hung beside floral tapestries), league President Basil DeVito enthused that the District and his fledgling football venture might someday go together like cameras and helmets. D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission President Bobby Goldwater played hard to get. “Today’s a first date,” said Goldwater, “and now we need to see if we want to continue dating.” XFL suits might want to keep their little black book of other big cities handy. —Eric Hoover
