On its forthcoming disc, Gozo Poderoso, Aterciopelados can’t seem to decide whether it wants to be a swank, electronica-influenced pop ensemble or a somber rock en español band. On cuts showcasing the latter sound, the Velvety Ones’ bland power chords and melodramatic Spanish melodies resemble generic American album rock. But on tunes employing the former style, the outfit’s more clichéd elements are reined in, allowing more impressive elements of the band—Hector Buitrago’s bouncy programmed beats, vocalist Andrea Echeverri’s pungent timbre—to shine. Although Aterciopelados has worked with Arto Lindsay, Marc Ribot, and Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera, on this effort, its global grooves sink and swim only with the aid of fellow Colombians. The band plays at 8:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $20. (703) 549-7500. (Steve Kiviat)
