Rippling arm muscles. Manly, unkempt sideburns. One performer promises to “disrobe you with his steely eyes”; another—for the more timid—is a “sentimental, sensitive gentleman able to please in every way.” Ladies, these aren’t your mothers’ Chippendales: They are 20 of the country’s hottest drag kings, and they’re coming to D.C. to shake their asses, break your hearts, and fuck with your minds. Though women wearing men’s clothing are nothing new or noteworthy—a gal caught sporting her boyfriend’s flannel will attract much less attention than, say, her man borrowing a kinky pair of her hot pants—the staging of an elaborate, gender-bending performance similar to those of their queenish cousins is a relatively new and increasingly popular scene for these kings. Check out Carlos Las Vegas (the “Dom Perignon of drag king entertainment,” pictured), Dirk Diggler, and the Washington City Paper’s own Drag King Ken (by day, production artist Kendra Kuliga), who will be among many are-they-or-aren’t-they others at the show that’s promising to “bring D.C. to its knees.” Just don’t be surprised at what you find once you’re down there. At 9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $15. (202) 667-7960. (Tricia Olszewski)
