The annual National Association of Uniform Manufacturers and Distributors’ (NAUMD) Best Dressed Police Department Competition has local law enforcement agencies jockeying for top honors. The Metro Transit Police Department took the category of Best Dressed Specialized Agency in 1999, according to NAUMD, because of the agency’s fetching “pink tan trousers with brown stripes, tan shirts, olive green jackets and brown ties.” The D.C. transit cops were bested in 2000, however, by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police and their “light banker’s gray trousers” and “smoky gray colored campaign style hats.” The 2001 competition is still up for grabs, and the winners will be announced in the August edition of Law & Order magazine. Perhaps this is the year when the “sharp, professional and neat” appearance of the Alexandria Police Department will win over the judges. Alexandria’s cops are the Susan Luccis of the competition, receiving honorable mentions for six consecutive years. —Sarah Godfrey
