Those who attended the July 3 dress rehearsal for the District’s annual Capitol Fourth concert might have found the Pointer Sisters more spry than usual, with one sister sporting a bicep tattoo. In fact, it was local trio Rhapsodi that filled in for the absent Pointers the night before the show. The singers impressed conductor Erich Kunzel enough that he invited them to perform “The Neutron Dance” at the Cincinnati Symphony’s “Space Odyssey” show later in July, according to Capitol Concerts spokesperson Gail Rubin. Less impressive was host Barry Bostwick’s loungey take on Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration”a rendition that was past even the help of the bikini-clad Washington Redskins’ cheerleaders, who surrounded the Spin City mayor as he boogied down.
