The beleaguered tenants of 1417 Newton St. NW, formerly owned by accused slumlord Randy McRae (“The Trouble With Randy,” 4/20), celebrated when their building was sold at a July 10 foreclosure auction to Greg Williams, a local real estate developer, for $265,000. The tenants couldn’t help but note that the price was far lower than the $2.8 million McRae asked for the building in April, when he offered to sell it to residents, but they’re still glad to have him out of their lives. McRae racked up more than 2,000 housing-code violations at several District properties, which landed them on the mayor’s “hot properties” list. After fighting McRae for more than a year, resident Suzanne Wopperer says she’s happy just to move on: “I, for one, will be celebrating an immediate return to pursuit of industry and self-improvement.” —Annys Shin
