When temperatures soared at a packed Aug. 8 press conference on children’s health-insurance programs held at Garrison Elementary School in Northwest, many of the speakers—including New York State Health Commissioner Antonia C. Novello and Amateur Athletic Union President Bobby Dodd—cut right to the chase as kids and adults alike fanned themselves frantically. Mayor Anthony A. Williams, however, found time to regale his audience with a quip about how he thought about doing a cannonball on his way in, and then followed it up with an oddly placed remark about his sadness over Olympian Marion Jones’ loss in a 100-meter race at the International Amateur Athletic Federation World Championships. Williams did finally get down to business, noting that the District’s enrollment rate for its Healthy DC Kids program is more than four times the national average. Now that’s worthy of a cannonball. —Mary Guiden
