It’s sad that Scottish brothers Craig and Charlie Reid—better known as the Proclaimers—may never top their staggering 1987 debut, This Is the Story. Fourteen years later, the tart, sentimental folk attack of that record sounds as brilliant as it ever did. Yet that debut sank like a stone here in the States, as did their second record (the more rockin’ Sunshine on Leith), until Benny and Joon’s soundtrack rescued the ebullient single “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” and made these two Hibernian FC fans some well-deserved cash. Tonight, the Reids are back stateside, touring in support of their latest record, Persevere. And this time out, the siblings’ wonderfully sonorous tunes are anchored by the sturdiest of pub-rock stylings. (The anti-PC anthem “Everybody’s a Victim” is particularly pungent stuff.) Put simply, the Proclaimers make bracing, strangely uplifting music, and their live show should prove a rootin’-tartan rave-up. At 7:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $17.50. (703) 549-7500. (Richard Byrne)
