One of the more pungent remarks attributed to American newspaperman H.L. Mencken was that “No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.” Kmart certainly has taken Mencken to heart. The full-page American flag advertisement placed by the variety-store chain in Sunday’s Washington Post gave readers who’d never seen the Stars and Stripes before directions for hanging the newsprint banner in their windows: “This Side Up.” Richard Byrne
