Next Time, the Hat?
On behalf of Chief Charles H. Ramsey and my 3,800 brothers and sisters who serve the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), I would like to extend the warmest of congratulations and expression of appreciation. Your report about the Metropolitan Police Department’s Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (“Beat Happening,” 10/5) was a large step toward accomplishing the overall mission of the MPD. Your professional and insightful report truly helped bridge the perceived gap between the MPD and the communities we serve.
As you are aware, Officer Kelly McMurry and I serve Chief Ramsey as his liaisons to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities, working to create better understanding and increase communications. Our mission to educate the public and law enforcement communities has been significantly advanced due to your efforts. It is my hope that this is the beginning of many positive portrayals of the MPD in the media. In times such as these, positive reports like yours serve to instill confidence and trust in the MPD while also providing its members with a feeling of pride, honor, and dignity.
I have enclosed a small token of my appreciation, our shoulder patch and departmental history. Chief Ramsey proudly distributes these to members of the community and other agencies, to celebrate our department’s rich history and unique jurisdictional responsibilities within the nation’s capitol.
Once again, I salute your efforts to support the MPD and the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities!
