MONDAY
Noise-sick and in cahoots with someone named Valentine (you read that right), ex-Antioch Arrow members Mac Mann and Ron Avila have turned their backs on the epic chaos of their early musical career in favor of Kurt Weill-esque jazz rock. Though Get Hustle inexplicably hates Steely Dan, the Portland trio’s work has a lot more in common with Fagen and Becker’s sophisticated jazz leanings than the heavy postpunk of its peers. Well, actually, its piano-driven, sometimes-freeform art jive probably sounds more like Canterbury prog-rockers Henry Cow circa In Praise of Learning, when Slapp Happy singer Dagmar Krause was wailing away in the foreground. Regardlesslike Antioch Arrow circa the mid-’90sthe band is pushing the envelope and sounding like few others on the horizon. Get Hustle plays with Love Life at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat’s Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $5. (202) 667-7960. (Brent Burton)
